SECONDARY SCHOOL
Grades 8-12

  • Class Sizes Matter
Our school offers smaller classes for brighter futures. Classes range from 20 students in the primary to 28 in our largest classes in the secondary. We know your child as an individual and work hard to help them reach the yearly standards, by assigning meaningful homework and letting you know how they are doing.
  • Grade 8-12 Program
Our secondary school continues our tradition of academic excellence, with a focus on essay writing, advanced mathematics, and hands-on science experiments. Our students average 2 years above grade level on the standardized tests. Our dedicated faculty members inspire students and, with the support of involved parents, hold them accountable for their work and behaviour. Citizenship and leadership are key tenets of our program, which are infused into creating a safe and supportive school as well as helping students prepare for scholarship and post-secondary applications. We have options focused on helping students get ready for post-secondary, and we have an extensive variety of extracurricular activities
  • How to Register
Our waiting list is very long, so we encourage all interested families to sign up. Spaces are offered first-come, first-served: https://www.auroraschool.ca/waitlist When students reach the top of the waiting list, they are invited to a placement assessment based on Canadian Standards in English and mathematics. Students will be offered a place in the grade that they are ready to take. Sign up below for our next Information Night if you would like a tour of the school.
  • Kindergarten to Grade 7 Program
Our program starts in kindergarten with an advanced, enriched literacy and mathematics program. Students learn how to be successful students as well as the alphabet, printing, and number formation. We believe that students want to learn in a structured environment, and that there is a balance of work and play. Our primary school focuses on phonics-based reading and a specialized printing and cursive handwriting program. We believe in mental math and learning your times tables and mathematical reasoning. No calculators here!
  • How We Started
26 years ago, a group of parents decided they wanted an return to the 3 R's of education, focused on traditional teaching styles. Alberta Education gave us permission to start a new public school, that wasn't a part of the larger divisions. Charter Schools have their own elected school boards and styles of learning. Ours is Direct Instruction: traditional education with homework and uniforms. In the last 10 years, we've infused technology in a thoughtful way as a tool that has its place in learning, just like a pencil. Every classroom has advanced smartboards and a 1:1 chromebook ratio, as well as our Learning Commons boasting robots and a 3-D printer. Students are prepared to be active learners prepared for their futures.
  • Fees
As a public school, there are absolutely no tuition fees. We are a registered non-profit, just like any other public school. Parents are responsible for paying for regular school fees for options courses, the same as any other school. In fact, our school fees are the lower than any other high school in Edmonton!
  • University Credits in High School
Students in grades 10-12 can apply for our Dual-Credit program. As options classes for exceptional students, we offer free post-secondary courses that are recognized by universities across Canada. Students work with professors and earn university credits and transcripts in grades 10-12. We are the only high school in Edmonton offering dual-credit courses that meet the standards for Bachelor's degrees. We also have Advanced Placement courses and we are an accredited Level II AP School.
  • Enhanced Academics
Starting from kindergarten, our program provides enhanced learning outcomes. Students focus on learning efficiently in the classroom, following a direct-instruction method: listen, watch, do together, do by yourself. Our students literacy and mathematics scores are 2 years above the Canadian average by grade 6. Our grade 10-12 courses are the 10-1 stream, to prepare all students for university entrance. We offer the Advanced Placement program for students interested in even more challenging work. Students in all grades complete homework each night so that parents can see how their children are doing and students can practice their skills.

We host information and placement assessments throughout the year.  Our next session is March 6, 2025
